Adult leopard geckos are usually 7 to 10 inches long from nose to tail tip and weigh 45 to 80 grams. Males are bigger than females, typically 8 to 10 inches and 60 to 80 grams, while females are usually 7 to 8 inches and 45 to 65 grams. Most reach full size by 18 months to 2 years. Giant and Super Giant lines can grow larger, past 100 grams.

Below is a size and weight chart by age, how big males, females and giant lines get, how to tell if your gecko is a healthy weight, and the tank size a full grown leopard gecko needs.

Leopard gecko size and weight chart

AgeLengthWeight
Hatchling (0 to 1 month)3 to 4 inches2 to 5 g
1 to 3 months4 to 5 inches5 to 15 g
3 to 6 months5 to 6 inches15 to 30 g

12 to 18 months7 to 9 inches45 to 70 g
Adult (18 months and up)7 to 10 inches45 to 80 g

These are typical ranges, not targets. Growth depends on genetics, sex, food and temperature, so two healthy geckos of the same age can differ by 20 grams. Track your gecko against itself: steady gain while young and a stable weight as an adult are what matter.

How big do male and female leopard geckos get?

Sex in leopard geckos is set by the temperature the eggs are incubated at. Eggs kept around 80°F hatch mostly females, while eggs kept around 87 to 90°F hatch mostly males. So a breeder's incubation temperature has a big effect on how large your gecko ends up.

Giant and Super Giant leopard geckos

Giant and Super Giant are bloodlines bred for size, and they are often combined with colour morphs. They are the reason some leopard geckos grow well beyond the usual range.

LineTypical adult male weightTypical adult length
Standard60 to 80 g8 to 10 inches
GiantRoughly 80 to 110 g10 to 11 inches
Super GiantRoughly 110 to 150 g11 to 12 inches

Females of these lines are smaller than the males but still larger than standard females. If you are buying a giant, ask the breeder for the parents' weights, as "giant" is sometimes used loosely for any large gecko.

Is my leopard gecko a healthy weight?

Leopard geckos store fat in their tails, so the tail is the best guide.

  • Healthy: the tail is plump and about as wide as the body at its base. Hips are not visible, and the belly does not drag.
  • Underweight: the tail is thin, narrower than the neck, and you can see the hip bones. This is a sign of illness, parasites or the wrong temperatures, and needs attention.
  • Overweight: the belly drags on the floor, and fat bulges, sometimes called "armpit bubbles", appear behind the front legs. Usually caused by too many waxworms or superworms.

Weigh your gecko every month on a digital gram scale and write it down. A steady drop is the earliest sign of most health problems, often weeks before you see it. Our leopard gecko lifespan guide covers the common causes.

What affects how big a leopard gecko gets

  • Genetics. Giant lines and large parents make large babies. Some morphs, such as Super Snows, often stay a little smaller.
  • Sex. Males grow larger than females.
  • Food. Young geckos need insects every day or every other day, dusted with calcium powder. Base the diet on crickets and dubia roaches. See our diet guide for amounts by age.
  • Heat. A gecko that cannot get warm enough cannot digest its food, so it grows slowly. Keep the warm spot at 90 to 95°F (see our temperature chart).
  • Health. Parasites and metabolic bone disease stunt growth.

Feeding more than this, or adding fatty insects to make a gecko bigger, just makes it overweight. It will not grow longer than its genes allow.

What size tank does a full grown leopard gecko need?

A full grown leopard gecko needs an enclosure of at least 36 x 18 x 18 inches, about 40 gallons. A 40 gallon breeder tank is the budget option, and bigger is better, especially for giant lines. Babies can start in the adult tank as long as it has plenty of hides. Our tank and habitat setup guide covers the full setup, and the hides guide covers hide sizes for adults.

Usually 7 to 10 inches long and 45 to 80 grams as adults. Males are larger than females, and Giant and Super Giant lines can pass 100 grams.

How long does it take a leopard gecko to reach full size?

Most reach adult length by about 18 months and fill out by 2 years. They grow fastest in the first 6 months.

How much should a leopard gecko weigh?

A healthy adult usually weighs 45 to 80 grams: females around 45 to 65 grams and males around 60 to 80 grams. Giant lines are heavier.

Super Giant males are the largest, at roughly 110 to 150 grams and up to about 12 inches. A few individuals are reported to be heavier.

Why is my leopard gecko so small?

It may simply be young, female or from small parents. If it is not gaining weight, check the warm spot is 90 to 95°F, that it eats regularly and that its insects are dusted with calcium, and see a reptile vet to rule out parasites.
